12-02-2004 - Suspect in McGonigle Murder Arrested

Hayward Police Make Arrest In Year-Old Murder Case

HAYWARD, CA - A man already in Santa Rita Jail was arrested today in connection with a year-old murder case, Hayward police reported.

Erick James Brown, 30, of Pittsburg, is in jail on an unrelated charge, police said.

He is suspected in the Aug. 31, 2003 shooting death of 43-year-old Daniel McGonigle at a Hampton Inn at 24137 Mission Blvd.

Police responding to room No. 111 at the inn found McGonigle but no sign of a suspect except what surveillance cameras had recorded. By releasing the footage of a man fleeing McGonigle's room, police hoped to identify the suspect.

In early September, investigators said, they were finally able to present the case to the Alameda County district attorney's office and obtain the warrant that resulted in Brown's arrest today.

Police say they ‘still cannot speculate on the motive for this vicious incident.’

09-23-2003 - Victim ID'd in Hayward hotel killing - Dan McGonigle
Tri-Valley Herald

September 3, 2003 by Ivan Delventhal, STAFF WRITER

HAYWARD -- Police continued their search Tuesday for a gunman and a motive in the slaying of a 43-year-old man shot in the doorway of his Hayward hotel room Sunday night.

Meanwhile, the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau identified the victim as Daniel Joseph McGonigle.

Hayward police Lt. Darryl McAllister said McGonigle, a Bay Area native who had been staying at an assortment of local hotels and motels, had been at the Hampton Inn at 24137 Mission Blvd. for about two days when he was shot to death.

About 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Hayward police received a 9-1-1 call from the desk clerk at the Hampton Inn reporting the sound of gunshots coming from one of the hotel's rooms.

Officers arriving on the scene minutes later found McGonigle, shot multiple times in the torso, lying inside the doorway of room 111. He was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Witnesses told investigators they saw a man fleeing down a hallway in front of the room and toward the rear of the hotel seconds after the shots were fired.

The suspected gunman is described as a black man in his mid-20s, about 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a medium build and short hair.

According to police, witnesses said the suspect was wearing a light blue hooded sweatshirt, dark painter-style pants and a backpack.

Late Tuesday, McAllister said the motive for the shooting remained a mystery and that the search for the gunman was continuing.

"It is very rare for a case of this nature to occur at a place such as this, where safety and comfort are part of the daily landscape," McAllister said. "The need for police responses to the hotel have been virtually nonexistent."

Investigators have determined that three people were visiting McGonigle in the hotel room at the time of the shooting -- a 23-year-old Hayward woman, a 24-year-old Stockton woman and a 39-year-old Stockton man. None was injured or is believed to have been involved.

Those three people told police that McGonigle apparently argued at the door of the room with an unknown visitor for a few moments just before the shooting. The circumstances of that dispute are vague and have not yet shed light on a motive, police said. McGonigle, who stood 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighed 317 pounds, did not appear to have struggled with his assailant.

Investigators are working to retrace McGonigle's recent movements and encounters to determine if he'd had any disputes.

Anyone with information on the slaying should call Hayward Police Inspector Bobbie Koller at (510) 293-7079.
